Wadsworth Camp

a.k.a. Charles Wadsworth Camp

Author Code: AWCP

Born: Oct. 18, 1879 - Philadelphia, Pennsylvannia, USA

Died: Oct. 31, 1936 - Jacksonville, Florida, USA

Educated at Princeton University, Camp spent a number of years as a journalist, drama critic and reporter in New York before marrying the noted pianist Madeleine Barnett in 1906. Camp served with an artillery unit in the First World War, which he would later write about in History of the 305th Field Artillery (1919). His first novel, Sinister Island, appeared in 1915 and was well-received. In 1918, Camp's daughter, the novelist Madeleine L'Engle, was born. In 1916, he published The House of Fear, which proved immensely popular and which was made into a Broadway play in 1923 (as The Last Warning) and later a film in 1929. His daughter claimed that Camp had suffered lung damage by mustard gas during the war and that this was the cause of his early demise, but it is more likely that alcoholism was a main contributor. Camp's other works include The Gray Mask (1915), The Abandoned Room (1917), War's Dark Frame (1917), Guarded Heights (1921), The Hidden Road (1922), Communicating Door (1923), Barbarian (1925) and Forbidden Years (1930).
