William Isaac Thomas

Author Code: AWIT

Born: Aug. 13, 1863 - Russell County, Virginia, USA

Died: Dec. 5, 1947 - Berkeley, California, USA

Educated at the University of Tennessee, Thomas graduated in 1884 and took a position as Adjunct Professor in English and Modern Languages. In 1888, he took a two-year sabbatical and studied in Germany at the universities of Berlin and Gottingen. Having developed an interest in ethnology and social sciences, Thomas became professor of sociology at Oberlin College in Ohio in 1894. In 1895, he became the co-editor of the American Journal of Sociology. He was invited to teach at the newly established University of Chicago and went on to receive his PhD there. In 1907, he published his major work, Sex and Society, which was well-received. In 1910, he became a full professor of sociology at the University of Chicago, where he continued until 1921. Thomas traveled frequently to Europe and, in 1913, on a visit to Poland, met the Polish sociologist, Florian Znaniecki, who would later immigrate to Chicago to become Thomas' research assistant. The two collaborated on The Polish Peasant in Europe and America (1918-1920). Thomas's fortune began to decline when, in 1918, he was arrested by the FBI under the Mann Act. Although he was acquitted of all charges, his reputation was irreparably damaged. He moved to New York and lectured at Thorstein Veblen's New School for Social Research until 1928. He became the honorary president of the American Sociologist Association in 1927. Thomas effectively retired in 1937 after a short period as a lecturer at Harvard University. His other works include The Unadjusted Girl (1923) and Primitive Behavior (1937).
