Octave Thanet *

a.k.a. Alice French

Author Code: AOCT

Born: Mar. 19, 1850 - Andover, Massachusetts, USA

Died: Jan. 9, 1934 - Davenport, Iowa, USA

Having moved with her family to Iowa when she was six, French returned to the East Coast to study at Vassar and the Abbott Academy in Andover. After graduating in 1868, she returned to Davenport and began to write, with her first story, Hugo's Waiting, appearing in a Davenport newspaper. In 1878, she adopted the pseudonym with which she is best known today. Over the ensuing years, her stories appeared in all the major magazines including Atlantic Monthly, Lippincott's and Harper's. Many of her stories introduced local Iowan culture and folklore. Thanet also produced many non-fiction works. A staunch conservative, Thanet was actually against woman suffrage and was a member of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution). Her works include The Bishop's Vagabond (1884), We All (1889), Stories of a Western Town (1892), A Book of True Lovers (1897), An Adventure in Photography (1899), The Man of the Hour (1905), Stories That End Well (1911) and A Step on the Stair (1913).
