Wilhelm Raabe

a.k.a. Jakob Corvinus *

Author Code: GWRX

Born: Sep. 8, 1831 - Escherhausen, Germany

Died: Nov. 15, 1910 - Braunschweig, Germany

After a four-year period as a bookseller's apprentice in Magdeburg, Raabe moved to Berlin in 1854 and studied at the University there. In 1856, he published his first novel, Die Chronik der Sperlingasse, using the pseudonym of Jakob Corvinus. The book won a level of acclaim that convinced Raabe that he should continue writing. He produced a number of novels over the next six years before embarking on a tour of Austria and Germany. His first real success came in 1864 with Der Hungerpastor. In 1870, he settled in Braunschweig and began to concentrate more on shorter works that would become his literary legacy. Raabe became one of Germany's premier short story authors and was immensely popular during the last part of the nineteenth century. His other works include Ein Fruhling (1857), Der Hellige Born (1861), Nach Den Grossen Kriege (1861), Drei Federn (1865), Abu Telfan (1868), Der Regenbogen (1869), Der Draumling (1872), Alte Nester (1880), Prinzessen Fisch (1883), Im Alten Eisen (1887), Guttmanns Reisen (892) and Hastenbeck (1898).
