Frank H. Spearman

Died: Dec. 29, 1937 - Hollywood, California, USA

Educated at Lawrence College in Appleton, Wisconsin, Spearman settled with his family in Nebraska in 1887and entered the banking business. In 1892, he was a delegate from Nebraska at the Democratic National Convention. He moved to Illinois in 1894 and continued in banking while beginning to write. In 1900, he published his first novel, The Nerve of Foley. Spearman was a great railroad enthusiast and wrote many railroad stories. In 1906, he published Whispering Smith, which was an instant success and which was filmed on no less than six occasions. In 1961, it was also produced as a TV series. In 1915, Spearman and his family moved to Hollywood. He was awarded honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from Notre Dame and Santa Clara universities and also received the Laetere Medal from Notre Dame for distinguished service to Church and Society. His other works include Held for Orders (1901), The Daughter of a Magnate (1903), The Close of the Day (1904), The Strategy of Great Railroads (1904), The Mountain Divide (1912), Nan of Music Mountain (1916), Laramie Holds the Range (1921), Flambeau Jim (1927), Hell's Desert (1932) and Gunlock Ranch (1935).
