Elizabeth Stuart Phelps *

a.k.a. Mary Gray (nee) Phelps Ward, Mary Adams *

Author Code: AESP

Born: Aug. 31, 1844 - Andover, Massachusetts, USA

Died: Jan. 28, 1911 - Newton Center, Massachusetts, USA

Educated at the Abbott Academy and Mrs. Edwards' School for Young Ladies, Phelps, who was born Mary Gray, adopted her mother's name as a pseudonym after her mother's death. A consummate story-teller, Phelps had published her first story when she was just thirteen. In 1864, she published Ellen's Idol, the first of a number of children's works. In 1868, she published The Gates Ajar, an immensely popular novel that sold over 100,000 copies and was translated into numerous languages. In 1888, she married Herbert Dickinson Ward and the two would go on to collaborate on some romances in the 1890's. Phelps also has the distinction of being the first woman to lecture at Boston University. Her other works include Tiny (1866), Tiny's Sunday Nights (1867), The Trotty Book (1870), Beyond the Gates (1883), The Gates Between (1887), Chapters From a Life (1896), Trixy (1904) and Comrades (1911 Posthumous).
