Fanny Kemble

a.k.a. Frances Anne (nee) Kemble Butler

Author Code: EFAK

Born: Nov. 27, 1809 - London, England

Died: Jan. 15, 1893 - London, England

From a family of prominent actors, Kemble herself turned to acting after her initial education in France. She made her debut in Covent Garden in 1829 and was an immediate success. Although she became an accomplished actress, her true passion was literature, which would become evident in her later career. In 1832, she began a two-year theater tour of America which was a resounding success. During the tour she met Pierce Butler, the grandson of the Founding Father and signer of the US Constitution, and they were married in Philadelphia in 1834. The marriage ran into trouble, primarily due to their differences on slavery; Butler having become the largest slaveholder in the South when he inherited the family plantations. Kemble, a devoted abolitionist, couldn't accept this and, after spending some time on Butler's estates, returned to England. She would later publish her journal of her time on the plantation in 1863 as Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation 1838-39. She continued her stage career and gave very popular Shakespearean readings which were always in demand. Their divorce was granted in 1848 after a prolonged and drawn-out court proceeding. Butler eventually succumbed to malaria in 1867. Kemble continued to spend time between America and England and to publish her journals and other works until her peaceful death in 1893. Her works include Francis the First (1832), The Star of Seville (1837), Poems (1844), A Year of Consolation (1847), Record of a Girlhood (1878), Records of Later Life (1882), Far Away and Long Ago (1889) and Further Records (1890).
