James H. Schmitz

a.k.a. James Henry Schmitz

Author Code: AJSM

Born: Oct. 15, 1911 - Hamburg, Germany

Died: Apr. 18, 1981 - Los Angeles, California, USA

Born in Germany to American parents, Schmitz was educated in Germany and a short time in a Chicago business school. He worked for the International Harvester Company in Germany for a number of years before moving to America in 1938, shortly before the outbreak of war. In America, he joined the Army Air Corps and spent time in the Pacific as an aerial photographer. In 1943, he published his first story, Greenface, in Unknown magazine, which folded later that year. After the war, he set up a business with his brother-in-law producing trailers, but the company failed in 1949. It was at this time that he turned to science-fiction writing as a career. He published Agent of Vega in Astounding Science Fiction magazine in 1949 and continued to contribute to the magazine throughout his career. He is best remembered for his space-opera adventures which often employed female heroes. His first novel, The Witches of Karres, appeared as a serial in Astounding in 1949 and was published in book form in 1966. His other works include Legacy (A Tale of Two Clocks) (1962), The Universe Against Her (1964), The Demon Breed (1968), A Pride of Monsters (1970) and The Eternal Frontiers (1973).
