George Horace Lorimer

Author Code: AGHL

Born: Oct. 6, 1867 - Louisville, Kentucky, USA

Died: Oct. 22, 1937 - Wyncote, Pennsylvania, USA

Educated at Colby College and Yale University, Lorimer first worked as a meat-packer and a grocer before turning to journalism. He was hired as literary editor of the Saturday Evening Post in 1897 and within a short time became editor-in-chief. Lorimer recognized talent and was responsible for bringing some of America's top writers to the Post, including Jack London, Willa Cather, Frank Norris and Sinclair Lewis, to name a few. He also introduced a number of foreign authors to the American public, including Joseph Conrad and John Galsworthy. In 1916, he commissioned Norman Rockwell to produce the now iconic covers of the Post, a relationship that lasted for 45 years. In 1903, Lorimer published Letters of a Self-Made Merchant to His Son, which became a best-seller. Lorimer became the president of Curtis Publishing in 1932. His other works include Old Gorgon Graham (1904), The False Gods (1906) and Jack Spurlock, Prodigal (1908).
