Edwin Cannan

Born: Feb. 3, 1861 - Funchal, Madeira

Died: Apr. 8, 1935 - Bournemouth, England

Educated at Clifton College, Bristol and Balliol College, Oxford, Cannan suffered from poor health since infancy and only managed to scrape through at Oxford with a pass degree in 1884. He then spent a year with his aunt on an around the world tour. In 1885, he received the Lothian prize for his paper on Saint-Simon and in 1888 he published Elementary Political Economy. In 1895, he joined the staff of the newly opened London School of Economics. In1907, he was appointed professor of political economy, a position he held until his retirement in 1926. He then helped to found the LSE's journal Economica. In addition to his own writings on economics, Cannan also edited the works of Adam Smith and in 1904 published the definitive edition of The Wealth of Nations. His other works include Ricardo in Parliament (1894), A History of the Theories of Production and Distribution in English Political Economy from 1776 to 1848. (1898), The Economic Outlook (1912), Wealth (1914, Money: Its Connexion with Rising and Falling Prices (1923), An Economist's Protests (1927), A Review of Economic Theory (1929) and Modern Currency and the Regulation of Its Value (1932).
