Oliver Goldsmith

Author Code: IOGX

Born: Nov. 10, 1730 - Pallasmore, Longford, Ireland

Died: Apr. 4, 1774 - London, England

Educated at Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated in 1749, Goldsmith went to Edinburgh in 1752 to study medicine, but returned to London in 1756 in destitution. He worked at a variety of jobs including a writer for the Monthly Review and published some minor works before producing The Citizen of the World, a series of essays for The Public Ledger in 1760-61. He produced his novel, The Vicar of Wakefield, in 1762, which his friend Samuel Johnson sold for him for £60. He continued to contribute to a variety of magazines and periodicals, published poetry, and again tried his hand as a physician until his first play, The Good Natur'd Man, was produced in 1768 at Covent Garden. This was a financial success and he followed it with She Stoops to Conquer in 1773, which was an immense success. Goldsmith produced a wide variety of other works including biographies, essays and poetry.
