Francis Newton Thorpe

Died: May 8, 1926 - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA

Educated at the Lake Shore Seminary in Pennsylvania (later St. Mary's College), Thorpe graduated in 1875 and then studied law at Syracuse University where he received his PhD in 1883. He was admitted to the bar in 1885 and then studied at the University of Pennsylvania where he received his LLD in 1886. He became professor of American constitutional history at the University of Pennsylvania in 1885 and continued in that capacity until 1898 when he was named professor of political science and constitutional law at the University of Pittsburgh in 1910. Thorpe was a prolific writer who authored some 76 books in additional to editorial work, essays and articles for periodicals such as Harper's. His works, which are still used today in the study of constitutional law, include The Government of the People of the United States (1889), The Story of the Constitution (1891), Franklin and the University of Pennsylvania (1893), The Government of the State of Pennsylvania (1894), A Constitutional History of the American People 1776-1850 (1898), A History of the United States for Schools (1901), The Spoils of Empire (1903), The Divining Rod (1905), The Essentials of American Constitutional Law (1917) and The Essentials of American Government (1922).
