Dorothy Canfield

a.k.a. Dorothy Frances (nee) Canfield Fisher

Author Code: ADCF

Born: Feb. 17, 1879 - Lawrence, Kansas, USA

Died: Nov. 9, 1958 - Arlington, Vermont, USA

Educated at French convent schools and Ohio State University where she graduated in 1899, Canfield then studied at the Sorbonne before returning to America and studying at Columbia University. In 1904, she received her PhD in Romance Languages from Columbia. Initially, her ambitions were in the academic arena, but in 1907, she published her first novel, Gunhild, which was well-received. Later that year, she married John Redwood Fisher and the couple moved to her late grandfather's farm in Vermont. In 1912, she met Maria Montessori on a trip to Italy and subsequently published some non-fiction works on the Montessori methods. In 1915, she published Hillsboro People, a volume of short stories which also contained poems by Sarah Cleghorn. During the First World War, Dorothy was in France where her husband became an ambulance driver and she worked with children and blind soldiers. On their return to America, Canfield wrote The Brimming Cup (1919), which was hugely successful and became a best-seller. She repeated this success in 1924 with The Home-Maker, another best-seller. She stopped writing fiction after the death of her son in the Phillippines during the war in 1945. Dorothy was active in all forms of community work including the Vermont Children's Aid Society. She was a trustee of both Bennington College and Howard University and was a board member of the Book-of-the-Month Club for over twenty-five years. Her other works include The Squirrel Cage (1912), Bent Twig (1915), Home Fires in France (1918), The Days of Glory (1919), Rough Hewn (1922), Raw Material (1923), Her Son's Wife (1926), The Deepening Stream (1930), Basque People (1931), Bonfire (1933), Seasoned Timber (1939), Our Young Folks (1943), Understood Betsy (1946), Vermont Tradition (1953) and Memories of Arlington, Vermont (1957).
