Bertha Runkle

a.k.a. Bertha Runkle Bash

Author Code: ABRB

Born: (?) 1879 - Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, USA

Died: (?) 1958 - (?) New York, USA

Runkle was educated at home and at a New York boarding-school. Interested in literature from an early age, she contributed a story to The Century Magazine when she was only 21, which was accepted and serialized. The resulting book, The Helmet of Navarre, appeared in 1901 and immediately joined the best-seller list. Later that year she released a Broadway production of the story with Lawrence Marston. Runkle married Louis H. Bash, an army captain, in 1906 and traveled to the Philippines where he was stationed. On her return to America she was highly critical of the Philippino people and customs. She was an avid sportswoman throughout her life, enjoying golf, fishing and shooting to name a few. She seems to have ceased publishing after 1921. Her works include The Truth About Tolna (1906), The Scarlet Rider (1913), Straight Down the Crooked Lane (1915), The Island (1921).
