Owen Johnson

a.k.a. Owen McMahon Johnson

Author Code: AOJX

Born: Aug. 27, 1878 - New York City, New York, USA

Died: Jan. 27, 1952 - Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, USA

Educated at Lawrenceville School, where he was the founder and editor of the Lawrenceville Literary Magazine, and Yale University, Johnson graduated in 1901. He then spent a number of years in Paris, where he began his writing career, publishing Arrows of the Almighty in 1901. He enjoyed popular success with the publication of The Salamander in 1913, which became a best-seller in 1914. During the First World War he acted as a war correspondent for the New York Times and Collier's magazine. He returned to America with his fifth wife Gertrude Bouce Le Boutillier and resided in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Johnson's output declined after the publication of his pseudo-science fiction work, The Coming of the Amazons in 1931. He ran for Congress as a Democrat for the Massachusetts First District in 1936 and 1938, but was defeated both times. His other works include In the Name of Liberty (1905), The Prodigious Hickey (1908), The Eternal Boy (1909), The Tennessee Shad (1911), The Sixty-First Second (1913), The Spirit of France (1915), The Wasted Generation (1921), Blue Blood (1923) and Sacrifice (1929).
