Wilhelm Max Wundt

a.k.a. Wilhelm Maximilian Wundt

Author Code: GWMW

Born: Aug. 16, 1832 - Neckarau, Baden, Germany

Died: Aug. 31, 1920 - Grossbothen, nr. Leipzig, Germany

Educated at the universities of Tubingen and Heidelberg, Wundt received his doctorate from Heidelberg in 1856. From 1857 to 1864 he was a privatdocent at the Physiological Institute at Heidelberg and, beginning in 1862, lectured on psychology. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, he served as an army doctor. In 1874, he took the chair in inductive philosophy at the University of Zurich, but left the following year to take the chair in philosophy at Leipzig. There, he is credited with establishing the first laboratory in psychology and was one of the university's most popular professors. Wundt brought together the study of physiology and psychology and today is regarded as the 'Father of Experimental Psychology'. His influence on the field was widespread, especially in America. His most important works include Lectures on the Mind of Humans and Animals (1863), Principles of Physiological Psychology (1893), Introduction to Psychology (1896), Outlines of Psychology (1897), The Principle of Morality and the Departments of the Moral Life (1901), Elements of Folk-Psychology (1916) and Ethnic Psychology (10 Vols. 1910-20).
