H. de Vere Stacpoole

a.k.a. Henry de Vere Stacpoole, Tyler De Saix *

Author Code: IHVS

Born: Apr. 9, 1863 - Kingstown, Ireland

Died: Apr. 12, 1951 - Shanklin, Isle of Wight, England

Educated at Malvern College and St. George's and St. Mary's hospitals in London, Stacpoole then spent a number of years as a ship's doctor, which gave him time to develop his literary talents. His first novel, The Intended, was published in 1894, but received little recognition. His travels took him around the world and his knowledge of the South Pacific was especially acute, which was shown in many of his subsequent works. Most of Stacpoole's early works were generally unsuccessful, but in 1908 he published The Blue Lagoon, and this became his greatest financial success. The book was subsequently made into a film on three occasions, the last being in 1980. Stacpoole produced over sixty books and many were very successful, especially the sequels to the Blue Lagoon. He also produced several volumes of verse and translations. His other works include The Lady Killer (1902), The Vulture's Prey (1908), The Order of Release (1912), Poppyland (1914), The Pearl Fishers (1915), Under Blue Skies (1919), The Garden of God (1923), The Gates of Morning (1925) Tropic Love (1928), The Lost Caravan (1932), Ginger Adams (1937), Men and Mice (1942), More Men and Mice (1945) and The Story of My Village (1947).
