William Ralph Inge

Born: Jun. 6, 1860 - Crayke, Yorkshire, England

Died: Feb. 26, 1954 - Brightwell, Oxfordshire, England

Educated at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge, Inge was an extremely bright and gifted student and won a number of scholastic prizes at college. In 1888, he was ordained a deacon of the Church of England and began tutoring at Hertford College, Oxford. In 1899, he delivered the Brampton Lectures which were subsequently collected in Christian Mysticism. In 1907, he was appointed professor of divinity at Jesus College, Cambridge and in 1911 he became the Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral in London. From 1921 to 1946, he was a columnist for the Evening Standard and gained renown for his controversial political positions. He retired from St. Paul's in 1934. Inge was a prolific author and his many works include Faith and Knowledge (1904), Studies of English Mystics (1906), Truth and Falsehood in Religion (1906), Faith and Its Psychology (1910), The Church and the Age (1912), The Philosophy of Plotinus (1918), The Platonic Tradition in English Religious Thought (1926), Protestantism (1927), Christian Ethics and Modern Problems (1930), Things New and Old (1933), God and the Astronomers (1933), The Gate of Life (1935), Mysticism in Religion (1947) and Diary of a Dean (1949).
