Educated at St. Paul's School and Merton College, Oxford, Bentley his career as a journalist with the Daily News in 1901. In 1905, he published Biography for Beginners in which he introduced the four line humorous verse form which has become known as the 'clerihew'. In 1912 he left the Daily News and joined the Daily Telegraph where he continued as a journalist until 1934. In 1913, he published his best known work, Trent's Last Case [aka The Woman in Black], a much admired detective novel which had a great deal of success. He was a close friend of G.K. Chesterton to whom his novel was dedicated. From 1936 to 1949, Bentley served as president of the Detection Club. His other works include Trent's Own Case (1936), Trent Intervenes (1938), Baseless Biography (1939), Those Days (1940), Elephant's Work, an Enigma (1950), Far Horizon (1951) and Clerihews Complete (1951).
