Charles Neville Buck

Author Code: ACNB

Born: Apr. 15, 1879 - Woodford County, Kentucky, USA

Died: (?) 1930 - (?) Kentucky, USA

Educated at the University of Louisville, Buck graduated in 1902. He subsequently earned an additional degree in law and passed the state bar exams, but never practiced law. He then studied at the Cincinnati Academy of Art and took a job as a cartoonist with the Louisville Evening Post. Shortly thereafter, he became an editorial writer for the paper. In 1910, he published his first novel, The Key to Yesterday, but it was in 1913 with the publication of The Call of the Cumberlands that he achieved literary fame. The book was a huge success and drew on Buck's intimate knowledge of the land and people of the Appalachians. Buck's works were varied and included The Lighted Match (1911), The Portal of Dreams (1912), Battle Cry (1914), Destiny (1916), The Law of Hemlock Mountain (1920), The Rogue's Badge (1924), Iron Will (1927), Marked Men (1929) and Mountain Justice (1932 Posthumous).
