John Masefield

a.k.a. John Edward Masefield

Author Code: EJEM

Born: Jun. 1, 1878 - Ledbury, Hertfordshire, England

Died: May 12, 1967 - Burcote Brook, Nr. Abingdon, Oxfordshire, England

Educated at King's School in Warwick, Masefield finished his formal education at the age of 13 and took to the sea. It was during his many years at sea that he developed his writing skills and story-telling abilities. In 1895, he jumped ship in New York and began a string of odd jobs. He returned to England in 1897 and worked for a time as a bank clerk. Finally, in 1899, he published his first poem, Nicias Morituras, which was well-received. It was also at this time that he met Yeats and the two went on to become life-long friends. In 1902, he published his first collection of poetry, Salt-Water Ballads, which was an immediate success. That year, he also married Constance Crommelin, 12 years his senior. In 1908, he published his first novel, Captain Margaret, which sold well. In 1911, his poem Everlasting Mercy appeared and is considered his best work. In 1912, he was awarded the Edmund de Polignac prize. During the First World War, Masefield enlisted in the Red Cross and spent a year in France. Then, in 1916, he led a motor boat ambulance service at Gallipoli. He then spent some months on the lecture tour in America, where he tried to enlist support from the US in the war. He was awarded honorary doctorates by both Yale and Harvard during a subsequent tour in 1918. After the war, he and his wife settled near Oxford. In 1923, he published Collected Poems, which was a phenomenal success for a work of poetry, selling over 80,000 copies. During the 1920's, Masefield also received numerous honorary degrees including an Honorary Doctorate of Literature from Oxford University. In 1930, he was appointed Poet Laureate and held the position until his death. In 1937, he was elected President of the Society of Authors and over the next thirty years he continued to receive honours of all kinds. His wife died in 1960 at the age of 93, but Masefield continued to be a productive author, publishing his final work, In Glad Thanksgiving, in 1966. His other works include The Tragedy of Nan (1908), Multitude and Solitude (1909), The Window in the Bye Street (1912), Dauber (1914), Good Friday (1916), Reynard the Fox (1919), Right Royal (1920), King Cole (1921), The Hawbucks (1929), The Square Peg (1937), Conqur (1941), So Long to Learn (1952) and The Bluebells and Other Verses (1961).
