Katherine Cecil Thurston

a.k.a. Katherine Cecil (nee) Madden

Author Code: IKCT

Born: Apr. 18, 1875 - Cork, Ireland

Died: Sep. 5, 1911 - Cork, Ireland

Educated privately in Cork, Thurston began contributing short stories to many leading periodicals in the 1890's, such as Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, Windsor Magazine, Harper's, etc. In 1901, she married the Irish novelist, Ernest Charles Temple Thurston, but the marriage was never a success and they separated, finally to be divorced in 1910. In 1903, she published her first novel, The Circle, which achieved some success. The novel that made her reputation, and became a best-seller in 1904, was John Chilcote, M.P. (also published in the U.S. as The Masquerader). In all, she would have three best-sellers in her very short career. A known epileptic, Thurston was found dead in her hotel room and a subsequent enquiry found the cause to be asphyxia caused by an epileptic seizure. This has since been disputed and the possibility of suicide has been raised. Thurston's other works include The Gambler (1905), The Mystics (1907), The Fly on the Wheel and Max (1910).
