Alice Hegan Rice

a.k.a. Alice Caldwell (nee) Hegan

Author Code: AAHR

Born: Jan. 11, 1870 - Shelbyville, Kentucky, USA

Died: Feb. 10, 1942 - Louisville, Kentucky, USA

Rice began to write poetry and short stories at an early age. She was also an active philanthropist, beginning already when she was 16 as she started working as an aide at a mission school in Louisville's slums. She married the poet/dramatist Cale Young Rice and they settled in a house in Louisville. In 1901, Rice published Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch, the book for which she is best remembered, and it rose to the best-seller list in 1902. The heroine of the book, Mrs. Wiggs, was based on a woman Rice had befriended at the mission school. The book was made into a film on three occasions, the last being in 1934. Rice also contributed many short stories to magazines during her career. In 1927, she helped to establish the Cabbage Patch Settlement House for the underprivileged. Her other works include Lovey Mary (1903), Sandy (1905), Captain June (1907), Mr. Opp (1909), A Romance of Billy-Goat Hill (1912), Honorable Perceval (1914), Calvary Alley (1917), Miss Mink's Soldier and Other Stories (1918), Winners and Losers (1925), Buffer (1929), Lark Legacy (1935), Our Ernie (1939) and her autobiography The Inky Way (1940).
