Miriam Michelson

Author Code: AMMS

Born: (?) 1870 - Calaveras, California, USA

Died: May 28, 1942 - San Francisco, California, USA

From a family of Polish Jews who had emigrated to America in the 1850's, Michelson was educated in San Francisco and began contributing articles and short stories to newspapers and magazines from the 1890's. Her first, and most important, novel, In The Bishop's Carriage, appeared in 1904 and was an instant success, rising to the best-seller list in America. Although she continued producing novels and short stories, she never achieved comparable success with her subsequent works. She continued working as a journalist until the 1930's and was active in the Women's Suffrage Movement in California. Miriam's older brother Albert received the Nobel Prize in Physics for 1907. Her other works include The Madigans (1904), Yellow Journalist (1905), Anthony Overman (1906), Michael Thwaite's Wife (1909), The Awakening of Zojas (1910), Petticoat King (1929), The Duchess of Leeds (1932) and The Wonderlode of Silver and Gold (1934).
