George Tucker

a.k.a. Joseph Atterley *

Died: Apr. 10, 1861 - Albemarle County, Virginia, USA

Educated in law at the College of William and Mary where he studied under his relative, Justice St. George Tucker, Tucker practiced law in Virginia for a number of years. In 1819, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and served for Virginia until 1825. In 1827, writing under the pseudonym of Joseph Atterley, he published A Voyage to the Moon, thought to be the first American work of science fiction. He was appointed professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Virginia by Thomas Jefferson and subsequently became Chairman of the Faculty of the University. Edgar Allan Poe was a student there during Tucker's tenure and is said to have been greatly influenced by him. He retired in 1845 and moved to Philadelphia where he continued to write until his accidental death in 1861. His other works include The Valley of Shenandoah (1824), Laws of Wages, Profits and Rents, Investigated (1837), Life of Thomas Jefferson (1837), Theory of Money and Banks Investigated (1839), Progress of the United States in Population and Wealth in Fifty Years (1855), The History of the United States (1856), Political Economy for the People (1859) and Century Hence, A Romance of 1941 (1977 Posthumous - Written in 1841).
