Marcus Clarke

a.k.a. Marcus Andrew Hislop Clarke

Author Code: OMAC

Born: Apr. 24, 1846 - London, England

Died: Aug. 2, 1881 - Melbourne, Australia

With a limited education from Highgate School in London, Clarke emigrated to Australia when he was seventeen. With the help of his cousin, he obtained a job as a bank clerk, but showed no business aptitude. He then spent some time ranching before being persuaded to join the Melbourne Argus newspaper as a staff writer. In 1867, he began producing his own column which became very popular. In 1868, he and a group of friends purchased the Australian Monthly magazine and he took over as its editor. He renamed the magazine the Colonial Monthly and contributed some of his own work, including his first novel, Long Odds. Over the next few years, which included the collapse of the magazine, Clarke worked on a number of unsuccessful projects. He serialized his most famous work, His Natural Life (later published as For the Term of His Natural Life), in the Australian Journal beginning in 1870 and continuing into 1873. Today the work is considered one of Australia greatest literary contributions. It was also at this time that he took a position at the Public Library of Victoria as secretary to the trustees. Much of Clarke's journalism was mischievous and satirical which landed him in trouble on more than one occasion. He was declared bankrupt in 1881 and was passed over for the position of Chief Librarian which had a dramatic effect on his health and which led to his death that year. In addition to some poetry and his journalism his other major work was Old Tales of a Young Country (1871).
