Frances Parkinson Keyes

a.k.a. Frances (nee) Parkinson Keyes

Born: Jul. 21, 1885 - Charlottesville, Virginia, USA

Died: Jul. 3, 1970 - New Orleans, Louisiana, USA

Primarily self-educated, Frances married the politician Henry Keyes in 1903. Keyes who had been governor of New Hampshire was elected to the U.S. Senate and the couple spent a number of years in Washington D.C. She published her first novel, The Old Gray Homestead, in 1919 and it proved popular and increased her enthusiasm for writing. She was a regular contributor to many magazines including Good Housekeeping, where her Letters from a Senator's Wife was published in 1924. After her husband's death in 1938, her output increased dramatically and she became one of America's most popular authors. After her conversion to Catholicism, many of her works took on a religious theme. In the 1950's she moved to New Orleans and purchased the Beauregard House which became a center of literary activity. Her many works include The Safe Bridge (1934), Parts Unknown (1938), All That Glitters (1941), The River Road (1945), The Grace of Guadalupe (1951), The Ambassadress (1953), Blue Camelia (1957), Roses in December (1960), The Restless Lady and Other Stories (1963) and All Flags Flying (1972 Posthumous).
