a.k.a. George Henry Boker

Author Code: AGBX

Born: Oct. 6, 1823 - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

Died: Jan. 2, 1890 - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

Educated at Princeton University, Boker had a strong interest in poetry and literature and helped to found the college's literary magazine. After graduating in 1842, he began to study law but eventually gave it up to write poetry. His first volume of poetry, The Lessons of Life and Other Poems was published in 1848. He also wrote a number of successful plays, the best of which was probably Francesca da Rimini (1853). During the Civil War, Boker helped to establish the Union League Club and served as its secretary and president until 1884. In 1871, he was appointed U.S. Minister to Turkey and from 1875 to 1878 he held the same position in Russia. Boker's works include The Betrothal (1850), Anne Boleyn (1850), The Podesta's Daughter (1852), Leonor de Guzman (1853), Poems of the War (1864), Konigsmark, The Legend of the Hounds and Other Poems (1869) and The Book of the Dead (1882).
