Albertus Magnus

a.k.a. Saint Albertus Magnus, Saint Albert the Great

Author Code: CSAM

Born: (?) 1200 - Launingen, Bavaria, Germany

Died: Nov. 15, 1280 - Cologne, Germany

Educated at the University of Padua, Albertus joined the Dominican order around 1223. He then studied theology in Bologna before spending a number of years teaching in Germany. He received his doctorate in Paris in 1245 and taught there for a time, numbering Thomas Aquinas among his students. The two developed a great friendship that would last until Aquinas' death. In 1260, he became the Bishop of Renensburg and retired from that position in 1262. He continued to preach in Germany until his death. Albertus was a prolific writer on a myriad of subjects including the sciences, theology and philosophy. He was also the leading scholar of his time on the works of Aristotle. He is said to have dabbled in alchemy and is credited with the discovery of arsenic. He was beatified by Pope Gregory XV in 1622 and canonized in 1931. His works filled nearly 40 volumes and included Magister Sententiarium (1245), De Unitate Intellectus Contra Averroem (1256) and De Quindecim Problematibus (1270).
