Friedrich von Bernhardi

a.k.a. Friedrich Adolf Julius von Bernhardi, General Friedrich Bernhardi

Author Code: GFVB

Born: Nov. 22, 1849 - St. Petersburg, Russia

Died: Dec. 11, 1930 - Jelenia Gora, Poland

Bernhardi's family emigrated to Silesia in 1851. Entering a military career, he became a lieutenant in the Prussian cavalry and took part in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. He had the distinction of being the first German to ride through the Arc de Triumphe in victory. From 1891 to 1894 he was the military attache at Berne in Switzerland and later taught at the General Staff School in Berlin. Rising through the ranks, Bernhardi became a general in 1907, but in 1909 retired to concentrate on his writing. In 1912, he published Germany and Next War, which became a best-seller in Germany. In it, his fierce nationalism and militarism were viewed by many outside of Germany to be one of the many causes of the conflict that it predicted. At the outbreak of the war in 1914, he was given command of an army corps. A talented soldier, Bernhardi was decorated during the war and led the German defence against the Brusilov Offensive in 1916. Following the war, Bernhardi continued writing military history. His other works include Cavalry in War and Peace (1910), On War of Today (1912), How Germany Makes War (1914), Germany and England (1915), War of the Future (1920) and Germany's Heroic Struggle (1921).
