Wilfrid Wilson Gibson

Author Code: EWWG

Born: Oct. 2, 1878 - Hexam, Northumberland, England

Died: May 26, 1962 - Virginia Water, Surrey, England

Educated at private schools and by his sister Elizabeth who was a published poet, Gibson was encouraged to write poetry from his early years. Although he began publishing his poetry as early as 1897, it wasn't until 1907 with the appearance of The Stonefolds, that his work took on the theme of ordinary people which would characterize his work for the remainder of his career. In 1912, he moved to London where he became friends with Katherine Mansfield who introduced him to Edward Marsh. Gibson contributed to Marsh's Georgian Poetry and through Marsh met Rupert Brooke. The two became close friends and Gibson would eventually become an heir to part of Brooke's estate. In 1915, Gibson married Geraldine Audrey Townshend and they moved to Gloucestershire. Suffering from poor eyesight, Gibson was turned down for military service several times. In 1917, he began a successful lecture tour in America and, while there, enlisted in the Army Service Corps, serving for two years, although he never saw combat. Nevertheless, Gibson is acknowledged as one of the 'War Poets' commemorated at Westminster Abbey. Continuing to write after the war, he published his Collected Poems in 1926, a massive work of over 750 pages. Thereafter, his output declined and his final book, Within Four Walls, was published in 1950, the year of the death of his wife. His works include Golden Helm and Other Verse (1903), Nets of Love (1905), Akra the Slave (1910), Challenge (1912), Fires (1912), Hare and Other Tales (1912), Borderlands and Thoroughfares (1914), Battle (1915), Friends (1916), Neighbours (1920), Krindlesyke (1922), Between Fairs (1927), Hazards (1930), Islands (1932), Alert (1941) and Searchlights (1943).
