Wallace Irwin

Author Code: AWIW

Born: Mar. 15, 1875 - Oneida, New York, USA

Died: Feb. 14, 1959 - Southern Pines, North Carolina, USA

Educated at Stanford University, Irwin was expelled for lampooning the faculty in some of his verse in a campus magazine. He took a job as a journalist with the San Francisco Examiner and proceeded to work for various papers over the ensuing years. In 1901, he published The Love Sonnets of a Hoodlum, his first book of poetry and one which was well-received. Irwin had a special sense of humour, often with a racial slant, and often wrote under various pseudonyms, the most memorable being Hashimura Togo, a supposed Japanese writing about the Far East. Irwin was relatively successful over the years, but his output began to decline after the 1930's. His works include Nautical Lays of a Landsman (1904), At the Sign of the Dollar (1905), Ballads of Chinatown (1906), The Love Sonnets of a Car Conductor (1908), Venus in the East (1918), Blooming Angel (1919), Suffering Husbands (1920), Mated (1926), Days of Her Life (1930), North Shore (1932) and Young Wife (1936).
