William Henry Drummond

Author Code: OWHD

Born: Apr. 13, 1854 - Mohill, Ireland

Died: Apr. 6, 1907 - Cobalt, Ontario, Canada

Drummond immigrated to Canada with his family in 1864. After the death of his father in 1866, he was forced to leave school and earn a living. He worked a few years as a telegraph operator, but returned to his education in 1876 at the High School of Montreal followed by McGill College where he began medical studies. In 1879, he transferred to the medical department of Bishop's College, where he received his degree. After interning as a surgeon, Drummond set up his own medical practice in 1888. In 1893, he became professor of hygiene at Bishop's and the following year was appointed assistant registrar and professor of medical jurisprudence. In 1895, he became the editor of the Canada Medical Record. In 1897, he published The Habitant and Other French-Canadian Poems, which was an instant success and changed Drummond's life. He began a successful literary career and his poetry was internationally acclaimed. He traveled to Britain, where he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1898. In 1899, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. In spite of his literary successes, he continued to run his medical practice until 1905. He died of a cerebral haemorrhage in 1907. His other works include Johnnie Courteau and Other Poems (1901), Voyageur and Other Poems (1905) and Great Fight; Poems and Sketches (1908 Posthumous). His complete poetical works were published posthumously in 1912.
