Holger Drachmann

a.k.a. Holger Henrik Herholdt Drachmann

Drachmann studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and became an accomplished artist before embarking on a literary career. He traveled widely in Europe and contributed travel notes to various Danish newspapers whilst abroad. On his return to Denmark, he settled on the island of Bornholm, where he continued to paint while writing poetry. In 1872, he published his first book of verse, Poems, which was well-received. During the 1870's and 80's, Drachmann was a prolific writer, producing numerous volumes of verse and prose including many short stories. He became one of Denmark's most popular writers and continued to travel extensively, spending almost two years in America where he was very popular on the lecture circuit in the various Scandinavian settlements there. Drachmann also translated Byron'sDon Juan in 1882. His many other works include Muffled Melodies (1875), Young Blood (1876), Songs of the Sea (1877), Over the Border (1877), Tendrils and Roses (1879), East of the Sun and West of the Moon (1880), Strandby Folk (1883), Once Upon a Time (1885), With a Broad Brush (1887), Forskrevet (1890), Wayland the Smith (1894) and Det Gronne Haab (1903).
