George Farquhar

Author Code: IGFX

Born: (?) 1678 - Londonderry, Ireland

Died: Apr. 29, 1707 - London, England

Educated at Trinity College, Dublin, Farquhar left school after two years to embark on an acting career. He joined a Dublin stage group, but a subsequent accident during a play convinced him to give up acting in order to write plays. He moved to London and in 1698, his first play, Love and a Bottle, was produced at Drury Lane and proved very popular with the public. Apart from a short period in the military, the remainder of Farquhar's short life was devoted to writing stage plays. His places had a strong influence on subsequent playwrights such as Oliver Goldsmith and Richard Sheridan. His other works include The Constant Couple (1700), The Inconstant, or the Way to Win Him (1702), The Twin Rivals (1702), Love and Business (1702), The Recruiting Officer (1706) and The Beaux-Stratagem (1707), produced shortly before his death.
