George W. Bush

a.k.a. George Walker Bush

Author Code: AGWB

Born: Jul. 6, 1946 - New Haven, Connecticut, USA

Died: ---

The son of former US President George H. W. Bush, he was educated at Yale University and, after graduation, worked for a number of years in the family oil businesses. He continued his studies at Harvard University, where he received his MBA in 1974. Bush married Laura Welch in 1977 and the following year ran for the House of Representatives where he was defeated. He returned to the oil business and built a number of successful companies. In 1989, he purchased a share of the Texas Rangers baseball team and served as their managing general partner until 1994 when he successfully ran for the governorship of Texas. He was re-elected in 1998 and announced his candidacy for President in mid-1999 and defeated John McCain in the primaries. Bush defeated Vice-President Al Gore in a controversial election that included recounts and decisions handed down by state and Federal courts concerning the voting process. As President, Bush presided over one of the largest tax cuts in U.S history, however, his performance in the economic sphere was somewhat below average. After the terrorist attacks of September, 2001, Bush established the Homeland Security department and deployed troops in Afghanistan when the Taliban regime there refused to hand over Osama bin-Laden, the perpetrator of the attacks. In 2003, Bush ordered the invasion of Iraq with a coalition of some 20 countries, in order to overthrow the regime of Saddam Hussein, purportedly a supporter of bin-Laden and Al-Qaeda and suspected of constructing weapons of mass destruction, which was later proved false. Bush was re-elected in 2004 after narrowly defeating Senator John Kerry in a close election. Under Bush's administration, the national debt increased, the banking crisis widened and the sub-prime credit collapse caused worldwide financial chaos. To be fair, the administration had requested increased regulation regarding mortgages in 2003, but this was ignored by Congress. His policies in his second term were unpopular around the world and the effects were felt by the Republican Party with their defeat in the 2008 election.
