James Parton

Died: Oct. 17, 1891 - Newburyport, Massachusetts, USA

Parton immigrated to America with his family in 1827 when he was only five years old. He was educated in New York City and White Plains, New York and initially became a schoolmaster in Philadelphia and later New York. He then worked for some years for the Home Journal and in 1855, published Life of Horace Greeley, the first of his many works that would establish him as one of America's premier biographers. Parton was also a regular contributor to Atlantic Monthly. His son, James, was the founder of American Heritage magazine. Parton's other works include Life and Times of Aaron Burr (1857), Life of Andrew Jackson (1860), General Butler in New Orleans (1863), Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin (1864), Famous Americans of Recent Times (1867), The People's Book of Biography (1868), Life of Thomas Jefferson (1874), Life of Voltaire (1881), Captains of Industry (1884) and Some Noted Princes, Authors and Statesmen of Our Times (1885).
