Roscoe Pound

a.k.a. Nathan Roscoe Pound

Born: Oct. 27, 1870 - Lincoln, Nebraska, USA

Died: Jun. 30, 1964 - Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA

Educated at the University of Nebraska, Pound received his degree in botany and went on to receive his PhD before embarking on a legal career. He spent a year studying law at Harvard in 1889, but returned to Nebraska without receiving a degree. Nevertheless, he was admitted to the Nebraska bar and began his own law practice. In 1899, he became an associate professor of law at Nebraska University where he continued to teach for a number of years. In 1904 he was made Dean of the Law School and from 1901 to 1903 he served as Commissioner of Appeals of the Supreme Court of Nebraska. In 1907, he began teaching at Northwestern University and in 1909 moved to Chicago University before finally accepting a position at the Harvard Law School in 1910. In 1916, he became Dean of the Law School, a position he held until his retirement in 1936. In 1940, he was awarded the Golden Medal of the American Bar Association. His works include Readings on the History and System of the Common Law (1904), Introduction to the Philosophy of Law (1922), The Spirit of the Common Law (1922), Law and Morals (1924), Criminal Justice in America (1930), Future of the Common Law (1937), Contemporary Juristic Theory (1940), Social Control Through Law (1942), Jurisprudence (1950), Formative Era of American Law (1950) and Labor Unions and the Concept of Public Service (1959).
