Alfred De Musset

a.k.a. Louis Charles Alfred de Musset

Author Code: FADM

Born: Dec. 11, 1810 - Paris, France

Died: May 2, 1857 - Paris, France

Descended from a distinguished family, Musset was educated at the College Henry IV and graduated with honors in 1827. He also studied art at the Louvre for six months before publishing his first work, A Dream, in 1828. The following year his collection of poems appeared and was praised by Victor Hugo among others. In 1833, Musset entered into a relationship with author George Sand which he later fictionalized in Confessions of a Child of the Century (1835) [La Confession d'un Enfant de Siecle]. Musset produced a number of very successful plays, among which Lorenzaccio (1834) is considered to be his best. In 1845, he was named a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor and in 1852 was elected to the French Academy. Suffering from heart problems exacerbated by opium and heavy drinking, Musset spent his final two years confined to his apartment. Today, he is considered to be one of France's greatest playwrights. His other works include The Cup and the Lip (1832), Rolla (1833), The Candlestick (1835), A Caprice (1837), Margot (1838), Pierre and Camille (1844), The Green Coat (1849), Carmosine (1850) and Poesies Nouvelles (1852).
