Robert Grant

Born: Jan. 24, 1852 - Boston, Massachusetts, USA

Died: May 19, 1940 - Boston, Massachusetts, USA

Educated at Harvard University, Grant graduated in 1873 and went on to receive his PhD in English in 1876, the first to be so awarded. He published his first novel, An Average Man, in 1884 and, in spite of devoting most of his time to his various positions in the legal profession, was a prolific writer. In 1893, he was appointed probate judge and would later sit on the Massachusetts commission that upheld the death penalty in the Sacco and Vanzetti case. Grant was a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. From 1895 to 1921, he was also a member of the Harvard Board of Overseers. His works include An Eye for an Eye (1889), The Reflection of a Married Man (1892), The Bachelor's Christmas (1893), The Opinions of a Philosopher (1893), By Hook or Crook (1895), Art of Living (1895), Orchid (1905), Law-Breakers and Other Stories (1906), Chippendales (1909), Convictions of a Grandfather (1912), The High Priestess (1915), Occasional Verse (1926) and Fourscore, An Autobiography.
