Norman MacLeod

Born: Jun. 3, 1812 - Cambeltown, Scotland

Died: Jun. 16, 1872 - Campsie, Scotland

Educated at the universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, MacLeod became the minister for Loudoin Parish Church in 1838. In 1843, he moved to a similar position for Dalkeith. He founded the Evangelical Alliance in 1847. In 1851, he became the minister for Barony Parish in Glasgow. There he established day-schools, a clothing society and other agencies aimed at improving the lot of his parishners. MacLeod was a prolific writer and also undertook editorial tasks for the Edinburgh Christian Magazine and Good Words. He traveled widely promoting the Church, including a long journey to India. In 1871, he published Glimpses at the Far East, which details his experiences there. He was appointed Dean of the Chapel Royal in 1861 and became a very close friend of Queen Victoria. His works include Home School (1856), Earnest Student (1857), Parish Papers (1863), Wee Davie (1864), Eastward (1866) and Days in North India (1870).
