Basil King

a.k.a. William Benjamin Basil King

Author Code: OBBK

Born: Feb. 26, 1859 - Charlottestown, Prince Edward Island, Canada

Died: Jun. 22, 1928 - Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA

Educated at the University of King's College, Nova Scotia, King graduated in 1881 and in 1884 was ordained as an Anglican priest. He became the rector of St. Luke's Cathedral in Halifax until 1892 when he was appointed rector of Christ Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Having suffered from failing eyesight and thyroid problems since his youth, King was eventually forced to retire from the church in 1900. He then traveled widely in Europe and decided to take up writing while he was in Paris. His first novel, The Inner Shrine, appeared in 1909 and was well-received. Because of King's background, much of his work has a spiritual orientation. King had a number of best-sellers during his career and also produced some non-fiction. His works include The Wild Olive (1910), The Street Called Straight (1912), The Way Home (1913), The Abolishing of Death (1919), The Conquest of Fear (1921), The Discovery of God (1923) and The Bible and Common Sense (1924).
