Frederic Jesup Stimson

Died: Nov. 19, 1943 - Dedham, Massachusetts, USA

Educated at Harvard where he received his law degree in 1878, Stimson practiced law in Massachusetts until 1884 when he became the assistant attorney-general for the state. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1898. In 1902, he ran for Congress on the Democratic ticket, but was defeated. In 1914, he was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Argentina, a post he held until 1921. Stimson produced many works on law, but was also an accomplished novelist. Writing under his pseudonym of J.S of Dale, he produced a number of historical romances such as King Noanett (1896) and My Story (1917). In addition to his law practice and writing career, Stimson also taught Comparative Legislation at Harvard. His other works include Glossary of Technical Terms, Phrases and Maxims of the Common Law (1881), American Statute Law (1886), The Law of the Federal and State Constitutions of the United States (1908), Popular Law-Making (1911), The American Constitution As It Protects Private Rights (1923), The Western Way (1929) and My United States (1931).
