W. Clark Russell

a.k.a. William Clark Russell

Author Code: EWCR

Born: Feb. 24, 1844 - New York City, New York, USA

Died: Nov. 8, 1911 - Bath, Somerset, England

Born in America of British parents, Russell was educated at Winchester and Boulogne before entering the British merchant marine in 1857 at the age of 13. He left the service in 1865 and began to write short fiction, mostly drawing on his experiences at sea. In 1874, he published John Holdsworth, Chief Mate, which was very popular, especially with younger readers. In addition to his many novels and short stories, Russell also worked as a journalist for the Newcastle Daily Chronicle and the Daily Telegraph. Russell wrote some superb horror stories which are still very readable today. His works include The Wreck of the Grosvenor (1875), The Frozen Pirate (1877), An Ocean Tragedy (1881), The Death Ship (1888), The Emigrant Ship (1894), The Convict Ship (1895), The Two Captains (1897), Abandoned (1904) and His Island Princess (1905).
