Richard Middleton

a.k.a. Richard Barnham Middleton

Author Code: ERBM

Born: Oct. 28, 1882 - Staines, Middlesex, England

Died: Dec. 1, 1911 - Brussels, Belgium

Educated at Cranbrook School in Kent, Middleton became a bank clerk for the Royal Exchange Assurance Corporation in 1901. He submitted poetry and short stories to various periodicals over the next ten years, but was never very successful as a writer. In despair, he committed suicide at the age of 29. Arthur Machen discovered his work and helped to publish The Ghost-Ship and Other Tales (1912 posthumous), a collection of humorous ghost stories which became extremely popular, albeit too late for Middleton. His other works, all of which were published posthumously, include Poems and Songs (1912), Monologues (1913), Poems and Songs - Second Series (1913), The Day Before Yesterday (1913) and The Pantomime Man (1933).
