William Combe

a.k.a. Quiz *

Author Code: EWCB

Born: (?) 1741 - Bristol, Gloucestershire, England

Died: Jun. 19, 1823 - London, England

Educated at Eton College, Combe inherited a large sum of money that allowed him to travel and, for a time, live a life of leisure. His extravagance soon depleted his funds and he was forced to take on various odd jobs. He returned to England and settled in London around 1771 and began to write, his first success coming in 1776 with the publication of The Diaboliad, a lyrical satire. In 1780, he was sent to debtor's prison for failure to pay his debts and over the years would spend a great deal of his time in prison. Combe was a prolific writer and produced pamphlets, newspaper articles, satires, travel books and biographies in addition to his verse. He is best remembered today for his series of Doctor Syntax books, which included The Tour of Dr. Syntax in Search of the Picturesque (1812), Dr. Syntax in Search of Consolation (1820) and Dr. Syntax in Search of a Wife (1821). His other works include The First of April (1777), Justification (1777), History of the Principal Rivers of Great Britain (1794), History of the University of Oxford (1814), Life of Napoleon (1815), Dance of Death (1815), Dance of Life (1816), Grand Master (1816) and History of Johnny Quae Genus (1822).
