Charles Evans Hughes

Author Code: ACEH

Born: Apr. 11, 1862 - Glen Falls, New York, USA

Died: Aug. 27, 1948 - Osterville, Massachusetts, USA

Educated at Brown and Colgate universities and, subsequently, Columbia University where he studied law, Hughes was admitted to the bar after graduating in 1884. He practiced law in New York City for several years before being elected Republican governor of New York in 1907. In 1910, he was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by president Taft. In 1916, he resigned from the court in order to pursue the presidential campaign as the candidate for the Republican Party, however, he was defeated by Woodrow Wilson in the election. He returned to his law practice until 1921, when he was appointed Secretary of State by president Harding. He remained in that position during the Coolidge administration. In the late 1920's, he served as a judge of the Permanent Court of Arbitration and the Permanent Court of International Justice. In 1930, president Hoover nominated Hughes to be the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, a position he held until his retirement in 1941. Over the years, Hughes produced many scholarly works in the area of law and jurisprudence including Arrest and Imprisonment on Civil Process (1905), Conditions of Progress in Democratic Government (1910), Some Aspects of Our Foreign Policy (1916), Some Aspects of the Work of the Department of State (1922), Foreign Relations (1924), The Pathology of Peace (1925), The Supreme Court of the United States (1928), Pan-American Peace Plans (1929) and Nations United for Peace (1945).
