Wilfred Scawen Blunt

Born: Aug. 17, 1840 - Petworth House, Sussex, England

Died: Sep. 10, 1922 - Newbuildings, Sussex, England

Educated at Stonyhurst and Oscott, Blunt entered the diplomatic corps in 1858 and served in Madrid, Paris, Athens, Lisbon and South America. In 1869, he married Lady Anne Noel, granddaughter of Lord Byron, and retired from civil service. In 1872, he inherited Crabbet Park, an estate in Sussex where he established a stud farm for Arab horses. In 1880, he published Love Sonnets of Proteus which received critical acclaim and established his reputation as a gifted poet. He traveled extensively in Africa and Asia Minor during the 1880's and became an opponent of British policy in these areas. In 1888, he published The Future of Islam, a work sympathetic to the Islamic movement. He stood for parliament twice, but was defeated. His other works include The Wind and the Whirlwind (1883), In Vinculis (1889), Griselda (1893), Satan Absolved (1899), The Bride of the Nile (1907), India Under Ripon (1909), Gordon at Khartoum (1911) and My Diary (1919).
