a.k.a. William Wetmore Story

Author Code: AWWS

Born: Feb. 12, 1819 - Salem, Massachusetts, USA

Died: Oct. 7, 1895 - Vallombrosa, Italy

The son of Supreme Court justice Joseph Story, he was educated at Harvard University and graduated in 1838. Thereafter, he applied himself to the study of law under the auspices of his father. Nevertheless, his true passion was writing and he was a frequent contributor to the Boston Miscellany. In 1847, he published his first book, Poems, which was moderately successful. In 1851, he published The Life and Letters of Joseph Story, honoring his father. It was also at this time that he became interested in art, and particularly sculpture. He moved to Italy in 1856 and became an accomplished sculptor in addition to a talented musician. He continued to publish poetry and other works and remained in Italy until his death. His works include A Treatise on the Law of Contracts Not Under Seal (1844), Nature and Art (1844), Roba di Roma (1863), Roman Lawyer in Jerusalem (1870), Nero, An Historical Play (1875), Fine Arts (1880), Vallombrosa (1881), He and She (1884) and Fiammetta: A Summer Idyll (1886).
