James Harvey Robinson

Born: Jun. 29, 1863 - Bloomington, Illinois, USA

Died: Feb. 16, 1936 - New York City, New York, USA

Educated at Harvard where he received his M.A. in 1888, Robinson then went to Europe where he studied at the universities of Strassburg and Freiburg, receiving his PhD there in 1890. He returned to America and began teaching at the University of Pennsylvania and, in 1895, moved to New York to become professor of history at Columbia University. In 1904, he began teaching a course on European intellectual history which ushered in the era of 'new history'. In 1912, he published The New History, which formalized its methods and content. In 1919, he resigned from Columbia in order to help in the founding of the New School for Social Research. In 1921, he published The Mind in the Making, undoubtedly his most popular work. In 1929, he was appointed president of the American Historical Association. His other works include The Development of Modern Europe (1908), Humanizing Knowledge (1923), The Ordeal of Civilization (1926) and The Human Comedy (1937 Posthumous).
